Choosing yarn and knit structure together

Begin with end use

Consider season, layering, skin contact and care expectations. Cotton, wool, viscose and blended yarns offer different starting points; the right choice depends on the finished garment rather than a fibre name alone.

Review the swatch

Compare stitch density, weight, stretch and drape on a knitted swatch. Rib, plain knit and textured structures can behave differently even with the same yarn. Confirm colour and hand feel on a physical sample.

Check after finishing

Washing and pressing can alter dimensions and feel. Evaluate the sample after the intended finishing process and agree measurement tolerances and care instructions before bulk production.

Keep cost visible

Yarn availability, consumption and construction influence cost and scheduling. Share target cost and quantities early so substitutions can be considered before sample approval.
