Bulk zip cardigans: approve the zipper on the finished garment

For a bulk zip cardigan order, approve the zipper as part of the finished knit garment. A loose zipper sample can confirm colour and hardware, but the buyer also needs to approve opening function, front alignment and appearance after the agreed finishing and care procedures.

Define the zipper before ordering production components

For a brand sourcing a zip-front knit cardigan, write more than “matching zipper” in the brief. Specify whether the front separates fully, whether one or two sliders are needed, and the intended opening direction. Confirm the chain type and size, tape colour, slider and puller, finish and any required supplier reference. Ask the supplier to propose a compatible component for the yarn, knit structure and intended wearer. A named brand or attractive puller alone does not approve the finished closure. Confirm any market-specific safety or testing requirements with the responsible specialist before release.

Match zipper length to the approved garment sizes

Record the zipper length and its measurement points for each garment size. Also record the distances from the zipper ends to the neckline and hem. Do not assume every size uses the same length, or that each increase in body length requires the same zipper increase. Compare the proposed size schedule with the finished size-set samples. Confirm component quantities by style, colour and zipper length, including separately agreed spare quantities. Identify which details must be approved before buying components and how a later size change would affect cost and timing.

Review installation on a finished physical sample

Request a sample made with the proposed production yarn, knit construction, zipper and finishing route. Review it closed and open, laid flat without pulling and during the agreed fit trial. Check front waviness, neckline and hem alignment, tape exposure, inside finish and fabric caught by the slider. YKK recommends clearance for the slider and temporary sewing checks for long zippers, especially on knits. That guidance supports checking the assembly; it does not define an acceptance limit for your cardigan or establish that WTBF uses YKK components.

Agree operation and care checks before acceptance

Define who performs the opening and closing review, which sizes are included and the agreed number of repetitions. Record any catching, damage, difficult insertion or change in front appearance. If a laboratory durability or strength test is required, agree the method and limits with the testing provider; a routine opening check is not evidence of a standard test. Repeat the relevant observations after the agreed care and drying procedure, retaining before-and-after records for the same identified garment. Ask the supplier to review the cause of a failed result and submit a corrected sample rather than approving a photograph of a freshly pressed front.

Freeze the approved combination and inspect production lots

Keep the approved garment, zipper reference, size schedule, installation details and finishing instructions under one revision. Require approval before changing the tape, slider, chain, length, attachment or finishing process. A substitution that appears similar still needs review for the affected appearance, fit, care and function requirements. Agree production inspection coverage across relevant sizes, colours and component lots, with a named person deciding exceptions. Quarantine affected pieces when a closure fails and agree repair and recheck requirements before shipment. Sample approval does not replace production checks.

Send a zipper-specific bulk inquiry

Send WTBF the cardigan reference, yarn direction, zipper requirements and quantities by style, colour and size. Include the sales market, approved or proposed length schedule, required checks, destination and target arrival date. Ask for confirmation of component sourcing, sample costs, approval timing and the capacity-based production schedule. Confirm every style and colour quantity and any spare-component arrangement in the order. A dispatch date is different from arrival; material procurement and approvals must be included in the schedule.

  • Attach front, inside and zipper-end references with revision identifiers.
  • List which zipper details are fixed and which need a supplier proposal.
  • Confirm who approves the finished sample and any subsequent component changes.

Questions about this guide

Can a loose zipper sample approve a bulk cardigan?

It can confirm selected component details, but approval must also cover the zipper installed in the finished garment, including the agreed size, finishing, operation and care checks.

Can the supplier replace an approved zipper with a similar one?

Agree a change-approval process before production. Review the proposed component and its effect on the finished garment before authorizing the affected work.
