Specify Yarn Composition and Measurements for a Wool-Blend Sweater

A fabric description such as “wool blend” leaves important decisions open. State the composition target and garment measurements separately, then approve the sample against both.

Define the fibre composition as a target

Write the requested fibre percentages and whether they are exact targets or acceptable ranges. State which fibres are essential, whether alternatives may be proposed and what must be disclosed before approval. Ask for yarn specifications or available options with the supplier’s stated composition rather than relying on a broad label such as soft wool blend. Record yarn count, ply, hand-feel direction and any approved substitution alongside the composition so a later sample can be compared against the same material brief.

Describe the sweater with garment measurements

Provide a point-of-measurement chart for chest, body length, shoulder, sleeve, armhole, cuff and hem, with the intended base size and size range. Show how each point is measured and give a tolerance rather than using vague terms such as regular or relaxed. Include a fit reference or worn sample when possible, and separate body measurements from finished-garment measurements. Note whether measurements are taken before or after any agreed washing or finishing process.

Check how the knit behaves after finishing

The same yarn can feel and measure differently depending on stitch, density, garment weight and finishing. Record the knit structure, intended gauge direction, rib proportions and any wash or relaxation process to be represented in the sample. Compare the approved sample after the agreed treatment, measuring it under consistent conditions and noting recovery, surface appearance and fit. If a material or construction change affects shrinkage or drape, request another review instead of carrying forward the previous measurement approval.

Approve one controlled material and size version

Keep the approved yarn composition, shade reference, measurements, grade rules and finishing notes in one dated specification. Record sample measurements beside target values and list any open issues that must be resolved before bulk production. Confirm how substitution requests will be handled and who must approve a revised sample. Send WTBF the reference, composition target, size chart, quantity split and delivery country to discuss material options and a project-specific development plan; do not treat an unverified yarn proposal as a confirmed specification.
